Privacy Policy
Sward is a lawn care app made by Sward LLC ("Sward," "we," "us"). This policy explains what information Sward uses, where it goes, and the choices you have. In short: your lawn log stays on your phone, except what Sage needs to answer a question, we don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.
1. Information that stays on your phone
These are stored only on your device. They are not sent to our server, except when you ask Sage a question: your county, region, grass type, your recent lawn-log entries and the earlier messages in that chat go with it, as described in section 3. Section 3 also covers Weed Identifier, where your grass type and region go with the photo.
- Your lawn profile: state, county, ZIP code, region and grass type
- Your lawn log: mowing, fertilizer, watering, rain, herbicide and other entries
- Calendar tasks you check off
- Your reminder settings
- Your Sage conversation
Deleting the app deletes this information. You can erase it anytime by deleting your account (Settings, then Account, then Delete account).
2. Your Sward account
You sign in with Apple. Sward asks Apple for no name and no email address. Apple gives Sward an account identifier, which we convert into a private Sward account ID. We use it to:
- Confirm you're signed in
- Know whether you have an active subscription
- Apply Sage's daily and monthly message limits
On our server we keep your Sward account ID, your subscription status and end date, and counts of your Sage messages. Your sign-in session is stored securely on your phone.
3. Sage
When you ask Sage a question, your phone sends your message, your grass type, region and county, your lawn-log entries from the last 30 days, the total nitrogen you have logged this year, and the last 6 earlier messages in that chat to our server. Our server turns the log entries into a short summary and sends that, your message and the earlier messages to our AI provider, which provides the AI model that writes Sage's answer.
- Our server does not keep the text of your messages after answering.
- Our AI provider processes messages under its commercial terms and, under those terms, does not use them to train its models. It deletes what we send it and what it sends back within 30 days, except where needed to enforce its usage policies or comply with law.
- Don't include personal information in your questions; Sage doesn't need it.
Weed Identifier photos. When you use Weed Identifier, your phone shrinks the photo and removes the location and other hidden details, then sends it, with your grass type and region, to our server. Our server passes it to our AI provider to suggest a weed. Sward does not save your photo on your phone, and our server does not store or log it. We keep only a count of how many photos you have sent, to apply daily and monthly limits. Our AI provider processes the photo under its commercial terms and deletes what we send it and what it sends back within 30 days, except where needed to enforce its usage policies or comply with law.
4. Subscriptions
Subscriptions are sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles payment; Sward never sees your card details. We use our subscription service to manage subscriptions. Apple and our subscription service share purchase details with us, such as which plan you have, trial status, renewal and expiration dates, linked to your Sward account ID.
5. Weather
Sward shows local weather using our weather provider. To do this, the app sends the approximate location of your county (not your exact address or GPS position) to our weather provider. Sward does not use your phone's GPS. Your phone contacts the weather provider directly, so, as with any web request, the provider sees your device's IP address (your internet connection's address).
6. Reminders
Reminders are scheduled on your phone. Turning them on lets your phone show notifications; it doesn't send your information to us.
7. Website waitlist
If you sign up on getsward.com, we collect your email address, the state you choose if you choose one, and a record that you agreed to our Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy and asked to be emailed when Sward launches, and whether you also asked for occasional Sward news. Signups are stored by our website host. Our website host also sees visitors' IP addresses. We use your email to tell you when Sward launches and, only if you checked the news box, to send occasional Sward news. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address anytime at support@getsward.com. We don't sell or share the list.
8. Services we use
| Service | What it does for Sward | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | Sign in, App Store purchases | Your Apple sign-in and purchases, under Apple's privacy policy |
| Our hosting provider | Runs Sward's server | Your Sward account ID, subscription status, message counts, Sage requests in transit, and your device's IP address |
| Our AI provider | AI model for Sage | Your Sage messages, photos and lawn summary, sent by our server, not by your phone |
| Our subscription service | Manages subscriptions | Your Sward account ID, purchase details, and your device's IP address |
| Our weather provider | Weather forecasts | Your county's approximate location, and your device's IP address |
As with any internet request, a service that your phone contacts directly sees your device's IP address: our weather provider, our subscription service, Apple (under its own privacy policy) and our server's hosting provider. Our server also uses your IP address to limit repeated sign-in requests.
We don't use advertising or analytics tools, and we don't sell or rent your information to anyone.
Do Not Track: Sward doesn't track you across other apps or websites, so it treats every user the same whether or not a "Do Not Track" signal is sent.
9. How long we keep information
We keep your account and subscription records while you have a Sward account. If you delete your account, we delete these records from our server and ask our subscription service to delete your subscription record, except where limited purchase records must be kept for tax, accounting or legal reasons. Apple and our subscription service keep their own purchase records under their policies.
10. Your choices
- Delete your account: in the app, go to Settings, then Account, then Delete account. This permanently deletes your account records on our server, your subscription record at our subscription service, and everything Sward stores on your phone, and disconnects Sign in with Apple. It can't be undone.
- Stop using Sign in with Apple for Sward: in your iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Sign in with Apple.
- Cancel your subscription: in your iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Deleting your account does not cancel an Apple subscription.
- Turn off reminders: in Sward's Alerts screen or your iPhone's notification settings.
- Ask a question or request your information: email support@getsward.com.
Your privacy rights. Some state laws (such as California, Virginia and Colorado) give residents specific privacy rights. We offer these to every Sward user, wherever you live:
- Know and access: ask what information we have about you and get a copy.
- Correct: ask us to fix information that's wrong.
- Delete: delete your account in the app, or ask us by email.
- No selling or targeted ads: we don't sell your information or share it for targeted advertising, so there's nothing to opt out of.
- Equal treatment: using these rights won't change your price or service.
To make a request, email support@getsward.com from any address and include the account ID shown in Settings, then Account. We'll reply within 45 days. If we say no, you can ask us to reconsider by replying to that email, and if you're still unhappy you can contact your state attorney general.
11. Security
Information sent between the app and our server is encrypted while it travels (HTTPS). Your sign-in session is stored in your iPhone's secure storage. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit what we collect so there is little to protect.
12. Children
Sward is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has used Sward, email support@getsward.com and we'll delete the account.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a material way, we'll tell you in the app or on this page before the change takes effect, and update the effective date.
